I know a word is misspelled. I click on check spelling & it comes back saying that their are no misspelled words.

The word is probably in the spell checker's dictionary somewhere.

Your question, for example, should have read "Why doesn't spell check work on this site?" but a spell checker can't find the error because "sight" is a valid word, even though you are using it improperly.

If the misspelled word makes a new "real" word, the spell checker will not pick it up. For example, if you wanted to spell "tired" but wrote "tried," the second entry is still a valid word, and will not be corrected. The Spell checker cannot figure out what you MEANT to say - just if it is spelled correctly.

Spellchecker doesn't catch it when you use the wrong homonym, like you have done in your question. In the case of "Why doesn't spell check work on this sight?", the word is site not "sight"

It wouldn't work on your question because there are no misspelled words. You have just used incorrect words for your purpose. (sight, their)
