To answer your question: Am I glad that I will eventually be dead? ...If had been asked that question in my teens or twenties, I would have said, "Yes." Life is hard when you're still trying to figure out who you are. But I am finding out that the older I get the less I want to leave this world. I don't believe in a heaven or hell so that dream of seeking a type of immortality is not on my radar screen. Dead is dead and I can't imagine running out of interesting things to do.

I would want to live forever at first glance, but after a tiny fraction of infinity went by (like hundred of thousands of years), I know I'd be quite irretrievably mad. Infinity would just be too much for a human mind to take. And I wouldn't want to go on infinitely like that.

The endless ages of time after the death of the rest of the universe would be like a kind of living purgatory, unless you somehow managed to turn yourself into something much greater than a human mind along the way (like an archailect - future supraconscious technology).

We may welcome an eventual death, then, realizing it even now, but we won't relish the idea of death just yet, because for us, it's usually far too soon. This is a world where there is much more to fit into a life than we actually have time for.

This gladness would require a belief that my existence is a burden to me. It is a gift I will be most unwilling to give up.

Actually, yes. This might seem odd, but the prospect of not living and the potential for another realm of existence is exiting to me.

Why should we be glad or not? We all die, one way or another.

And besides, could you consider seeing your loved ones die, and know you are alone? To watch your descendants live and die before you, while you watch the world suffer?
