I try to...it depends..if they look like they are drunk or smell like alcohol..I wont because I dont want to help them in their addictions. If they look hungry or have kids..I most certainly will help. as much as I can.
We dont know why people are in the situation they are in.We can't judge because one day that could be us.I dont want to see them do a little dance or whatever someone else said because homeless ppl are not trained monkeys...they have pride...they just got lost. Giving feels good.

no way. money given to directly to the homeless instead of a charitable organization that helps the homeless ensures a greater chance the said money will be spent on drugs and/or alcohol.

Funny thing, I lived in central LA last year and every day to work I was asked for spare change. Demographics for the neighborhood were around 30% Black and 70% Latino. Only people that ever asked me for spare change (in the entire year) were blacks and whites (though the neighborhood were not comprised of white families, there were still white homeless around). Never once got asked by a Latino. Don't have the answer as to why, but think it has a lot to do with the fact that they are more likely to center on a strong family life where, at a young age, a solid work ethic is instilled. But who knows?

Occasionally, although I prefer to give money to homeless shelters that care for many people rather than one, and they also try to get the homeless off the streets permanently.

Feeding someone daily instead of helping them change their lives is wasted effort. Which is why most welfare systems throughout the world have created "welfare" as a career for many families and extends from one generation to the next.

Welfare should be temporary answer to a temporary problem and never a permanent process.

people aren't homeless to "make life easy" and just because a person is homeless, that doesn't mean they don't have a job. most jobs that are available to the undereducated don't pay enough for people to live comfortably off of, especially when you factor in unexpected costs of living like the doctor or hospital. for rent to be considered "affordable" it should only be about 30% of a person's income, however with rising housing costs in america, the average lower class citizen ends up paying over 50% of their income on housing alone. so, yes, i give money to the homeless. i also help an organization feed homeless people every week. homeslessness isn't something people choose to do. and it's not something that should be ignored, or looked down on.

Since I learned that most (not all) of the homeless got there by drinking and drugging, I no longer hand a homeless person cash.
It's easier to buy them some food or get them a blanket.
They get all kind of free help through soup kitchens, and shelters. I have donated to these places because they can do so much more good for the homeless.
It has become a best practice of mine.

Usually. It really depends on the feeling I get from that person though. If I feel that person will spend it on dr*gs or alcohol, no. That would not really be in their best interest.
If the person is simply down on their luck or mentally ill, of course. Consider that 1 out of 4 homeless are veterans. I do what I can. I can do without my Starbucks.
I usually try to look them in the eye and treat them with respect. And wish them well. This is what I want my children to learn. We are all people. I am not better than they are, I just have more money.
It could happen to anyone of us, you know!

Yes -- I have a lot of times --- homelessness is such a big problem in our country because our country is failing so many people -- US citizens at least!! It's not just "bad addicts" homeless anymore. If I was homeless and someone gave me any cash, I'd probably buy beer too -- how else to calm down?

No. However, I give food to the homeless because some homeless get money then buy drugs and sale trade for drugs. Food is better for homeless than money, better than nothing. Be CAREFUL what u give them.

Never!
I give food and clothing and other such things.

Not always but many times these people are homeless for a reason, money management might be one reason. Alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness are just a couple things that run ramped in the homeless community.
To give money to such people is not helping but hindering them.
Instead give them a bag of food or whatever.

Of course this is for those who do not want to be nomads.

i was once given the advice to talk to them a litlle as this is appreciated and then ask them if they are hungry . if they ar hungry buy them something to eat (maybe a hot pie) and a hot drink (dont forget to ask about howmany sugars) .
the reason being many homeless get banned from the shops and even if you give money sometimes they still cant get hot food and drink.
sparing a moment costs nothing.
and yes i know there are some out there just to take your money but many are homeless and even if alcoholic etc they still need help
