I wonder if diamonds will hold their value, certainly the people at De Beers would love for us to believe that they are scarce and rare - we shall see.
I've always been intrigued by a line from a movie, I think it is from a film called Sneakers, not the greatest flick but the line from the film is ( I paraphrase)
"information is everything, and he who controls it will control the world."
So, my vote is that information, be it personal, demographic, socio-economic, medical, lifestyle, risk assessment. This is the commodity of the future (and the present)
After all, these are the variables that large corporations use to evaluate people for everything from insurance to employment, from housing to healthcare. The entity that can combine, correlate and warehouse this data will have incredible power to shape the lives of individuals and that excluding control of the more tradational media.
Just think about how powerful TransUnion, Equifax, Experian are now. Their reports and scoring can make or break deals. Shape lifestyles and demographics. Dictate your purchasing power and influence employment decisions.
But I'm talking about trading information on a much larger scale and with greater scope and depth.
He/she who controls information will control the future.

Land.
The population of the world is growing at an unsustainable rate.
We are consuming resources at an alarming rate and creating pollution just as quickly (including greenhouse gasses which give rise to global warming).
Ideally the world population would be a third of it's current size and everyone would be as prosperous as the Europe and the USA.
Birth rates tend to fall in wealthy countries, so it's a virtuous circle.
Unfortunately, by the time that happens the world will be so hugely overcrowded and polluted it will probably be too late.
So...buy land. They've stopped making it.

Enriched uranium - fuel for nuclear reactors. It is also probably the most valuable today, but it is not freely traded so we don.t know its price.

Gold and water. Gold will hold it's value and water that is clean will be more and more scarce in the future.
