When a description says, for example, "ruby gemstone"

Does that mean it's a real ruby or like a rhinestone ruby?

And...when it says, "0.36 carat total gem weight", what does that mean?

Any other information about this stuff is welcomed. I'm buying from overstock.com if anyone has any opinions about their jewelry. Thanks!

ordinarily a gemstone, is an actual precious or semi precious stone. i.e ruby, amethyst, sapphire.

The bit about the carat weight is how much the stone weighs in a unit of measure call carats. .36 carat weight is 72 milligrams. Apprixmate size would 4mm across. The carat weight for say a diamond and a ruby is not the same due to density. a .36 carat weight ruby is smaller than an equivalent diamond weight. The ruby is a more dense gemstone.
