Under the hood, there is a filter, called an "air cleaner element", to keep dirt, sand, etc., from entering the engine. Does the air that comes out of the vents (heating / air conditioning) into the passenger compartment (a) come from this intake and pass through the same filter, (b) come from another intake and pass through a different filter, or (c) come from a different intake and not get filtered?

There are tiny specs of something in the air coming from the vent. Does this mean that I need to replace the filter on the air going to the engine?

The air cleaner under the hood only cleans the air going into the engine. If your car is equipped with a cabin air filter, it would either be in the duct work of your heater or in the fresh air intake under the cowling.

Tiny specs are usually the sign of foam insulation breaking down.

If what you're calling the "intake vent" is unquestionably the return air duct, (interior the conditioned area) that is going back to the unit, then confident, you may. There are "filter out grilles" on the marketplace, that open and allow you to inset a sparkling filter out. in case you circulate this course, be sure you have adequate duct area interior the device, so as which you do not restrict the quantity of return air.

No... The air intake for the engine has nothing to do with it...

You may have dust built up in the vents. Maybe some part of the vent system is crumbling...

Look in front of your windshield, see that vent? This where the air for your heat and AC come from. You may have to raise the hood to see it.
This link may not be your car. But, it may help. The pictures are under the hood (Hood Up).
