i moved into an apartment this year with gas heat. this is the first time i've ever had to pay for heat. i was just curious as to the best temperature to keep it at or if i should only keep it on at night, or during the day or what? i've heard sooo many horror stories about gas bills being ridiculously expensive i want to try and cut down if i can. would a space heater while i'm home be a better option? i also have a dog and a cat and i dont want them to get too cold either. please help! its starting to get really chilly!

I like 62. My wife insists on 72. The answer is; whatever you are comfortable at. Don't pay too much attention to the thermostat... close any storm windows and check weatherstripping and caulking. Do whatever you can to insulate, although it sounds like you're renting and will not want to make any capital improvements. I wouldn't rely on an electric space heater; they're notoriously dangerous and can really rack up the electric bill.

In order to save money you need to conserve energy. Lower setting help accomplish this, but the inportant thing is to be sure the system is operating efficiently. To do that, call in a reputable heating company and have the system professionally serviced before you start using it. Expect to pay between $75-$150 for this service.

Try 68 or 69. It will depend on the place. One house we had it on 65-67 & was comfortable. Another house it had to be at 73 to be comfortable. You put it on a setting for a day & see how you like it; it is best to set it when it still feels slightly cool in the place to be economical; then adjust up or down the next day. Space heaters can help save on the gas but could raise your electric bill. Best to have it a little cool & wear a sweater.

A space heater can be dangerous and will be expensive to run. Keep your heat as low as you can and be comfortable. Turn it down 10 degrees at night and when you aren't there. Dogs and cats like it cooler than people do. They have fur coats.

68-70 is a nice temperature. If you really want to save some fuel you could turn down the temp. to 62 for the entire house and get a space heater to sit next to. Or you could turn the temp down farther and sit next to your dog with your cat on your lap. LOL "they would love you"

Gas heat is the most efficient way to heat in your case. Run it at 68 deg. when you are home and turn down to 60 deg. when not home...
