i like the idea of an a=frame for a primary home. can you tell me the avg. cost of an a-frame home? about 1100 sq. feet w/ loft bedroom and not a whole lot of extras. in my area a 1250 sq. ft. house to buy is 100,000 avg., i imagine a a-frame would be cheaper since there is many turns and cuts in the building.any idea how much to buy or build ? i cant find anything on it.

A-frames have a certain rugged charm to them, but are not very efficient energywise having a lot of area to chill or over heat depending on the season. They are easier to sell in some parts of the country than others. There is a limit to how tall they can be before the length of the joists in the sides becomes expensive to buy. An 1100 square foot house 20 feet wide would be 55 feet long and this is very big for an A-frame. If the walls are not to slope too much, losing space for people and furniture at floor level, the joists have to be 30-35 feet long, which is awkward. And if the loft is 10 feet up, there is 10-15 feet of heated space up there with it - draw a scaled sketch and see the effect of the angles.

You should be able to BUY an existing for a reasonable price, if you can find an A-frame on the market. From a real estate agent's POV, they are not easy as a resale.

I would not recommend building one, since the cost of an A-frame is not much less than that of conventional type houses, and you might find yourself taking a small bath when it comes time to sell.

A-frames are generally considered 'vacation home' type structures.

My sister bought an 'A' frame house but found it very dark inside during the day due to the lack of windows in the sloping roof layout. Have a great day.
