can it cause any damage ?..... form my understanding the lighter oil is for better fuel economy but the heavier stuff protects better..... and it is getting colder here (michigan)..... my truck has 50K miles and is a 2004 model... my oil pressure has stayed the same as when i had the 5w oil and the engine temp is also the same .... thanks

5W has better flow index. That means oil sooner get to the points of lubrication. My advise is stick to the factory requirements.

Right But you have to balance the Two, Performance & Engine Protection! 5W-30 Havline is Better for All Weather! Unless you're using a Good Syntetic.

The colder it is the lighter the oil should be,its easier on the engine as it thickens less when colder. With that many miles it would be good to use that 10w30 in the summer.

It will start easier and the oil will pump up to pressure faster when it's cold if you use the lighter weight oil. That means less wear on your starter, battery, and engine.

Thinner oil flows into tighter spots better and in higher volume. If you're worried about protection, use Mobil 1 5W20 synthetic. It protects better than 10W40 regular oil.
