Great question. There are a number of answers but at the end of the day, especially now that OS X.5 Leopard is released, the Mac Operating System is hands down light years ahead of Windows.

Some people try to say that Apples cost more, but this argument is normally not true as long as you don't buy your RAM upgrades direct from Apple. Build an apple workstation and compare to HP etc. and you'll see that in many cases the Apple is cheaper. Apple charges an arm and a leg for RAM upgrades, so buy your RAM from other sources.

Keep in mind that you are buying a far better quality product from Apple. Apples are designed to last - everything is thought out, and everything is quality. But at the end of the day both Macs and PCs nowadays are built from basically the same components....which means that your decision should be based on:
1) The operating system, Leopard is far, far superior. More intuitive, more stable, and viruses are a non-issue for most users. Its raw, powerful, simple, intuitive. Worried that you can't run a windows program on your mac? Simply run a dual-boot with Windows OS or install parallels or VMWare Fusion. (Which allow you to run both OSs at the same time and Windows program sit in your dock as if they were Mac programs...)

2) Quality and resale. Apple systems hold their value and their quality is superb. They're a pleasure to use. I can't think of any Windows computers that I truly enjoy using.

Sorry guys..But you really need to understand the differences to declare a winner. Don't listen to everybodies words on this..

What makes a apple good..Is the operating system. That's all. Hardware wise, it uses the same processors used in pc and pc based laptops.

I've used both pc's and apple based machines in the past years. Heck, my brother has a 6 thousand dollar mac pro in the other room. But considering he spent 6 grand on a dual socket 771 dual core system, 8 gigs of ram, 7300 gt, and a 250 gb hard drive..Is garbage. Yes the system is indeed powerful. But considering the amount spent (On a tower only)...Really not a good value.

When you buy apple..You buy the name. That's what you are paying for. I could take that 6 grand and buy a dual socket 771 system with two quad core processors that are clocked faster, a professional 1,500 dollar Eizo or Nec Monitor, 3-4 TB of hard drive space, a mouse, keyboard, a high end graphics solution, and have cash to buy a wacom intuos tablet if I wanted to as well. Don't get duped by the marketing...Yes apples can run windows now with bootcamp. But with a little know how and googling you can find pc's can run mac osx as well. There are some driver issues but it does indeed run. With time it will mature to the point that both are the same. The downright dirty side of apple is the fact they have special hardware on their motherboards which act as a self check device on Mac OSX installs. If the special hardware isn't there it won't install. But with some patches you can get them to run on pc's.

Choice is yours really. If you want to buy into the fad of overpaying for the same hardware then buy a apple. The only notable benefit of apple based systems is their operating system runs on unix. OS X is indeed a fantastic operating system. But is it really worth THAT much extra money? You can get better performance/price ratios from pc's. Don't be duped. Here's a scenario as well..

Apple: Ohh, You'd like to purchase the newest generation Quadro workstation graphics card for your rig? I'm sorry we only carry the previous generation Quadro FX 4500 for the same price as the new generation Quadro FX 5600. Unfortunately we don't support the new cards atm.

Choice is yours though....But personally. I'll never become a lacky or duped into a marketing scheme. Once you understand and get into the details of the computer IT realm...It's pretty easy to see through everything.

BTW..Just noticed some peeps saying. Don't listen to the "no viruses" comment. Windows Vista is actually much more secure than OSX...Then why are pc's more effected by viruses? Easy....That's where the market is. Most coders are all on pc's. They mass market is pc based. Therefore more attention to use the widely used format. The fact of the matter is. The only reason OSX has less viruses is due to this fact...

That's a loaded question, with lots of people who will answer you with strong emotions guiding their answers.

Personally, I like Macs better because I think the Mac OS is a better operating system than Windows. It's cleaner, more intuitive, and less likely to crash. It's also the root OS, whereas Windows is an application that needs DOS to operate, making DOS the Windows root OS. That's partly why Windows is not as stable as the Mac OS.

But Windows-based computers tend to have better graphics cards, which makes them more suitable for gaming than Macs.

Also, since Apple has only about 5% of the personal computer market, there are more applications available for the PC. Even though there are plenty of applications for the Mac that accomplish the same things as software for PCs, more people use PC programs to do their work. So it can be hard if you use a Mac and you need to exchange work files with a PC user.

But, on the flip side, with only a 5% market share, hackers have less incentive to write malicious viruses and spyware for Macs, so Macs tend to be safer in that regard.

Finally, all current Mac laptops can run Windows, but no Windows laptops can run the Mac OS. So, if you bought a Mac you would be, in essence, buying two computers in one. You'd have to buy a retail version of Windows and an emulation program like Parallels, but you'd then be able to use both operating systems and all the software that exists for both platforms.

That last point is the one that really cements my preference for Apple. Why limit yourself to one system if you don't have to?

Hi, the decision actually depends on the user. Windows Vista and OS X Leopard r both really nice operating systems. If u want something to do good picture and video editing and u won't be playing games then get Apple Mac. If u want to be doing decent picture and video editing and play games as well then I suggest that u get a laptop with Windows Vista. We all know OS X is very stable, but Vista is pretty stable and secure itself now. Microsoft has finally put in security features from Unix such as user account control. Anyway the final decision is up to u. I hope I helped.
Good Luck!

I would probably go with mac. Apple products are great computers and almost never crash and do not have not a lot of viruses. Apple computers can be a little pricey because Apple makes both macs and OS X. Most people would recommend a mac to people who never used a computer before because they are easy to use and are easy to set up. The new Apple laptops have a built-in webcam called an iSight camera and all new macs come with Intel chips, wifi, bluetooth, and other conveniences. macs are great computers.

i actually recommend which you get Microsoft computing gadget, because of the fact it somewhat is going to likely be perplexing to locate video games, application, or different issues for mac. And mac apple is greater complicated. I in no way observed all of us very own a mac for domicile use. often whilst i think of of apple i think of of faculty, artwork, and different agencies. yet its basically an opinion.

Especially today's Macintosh laptops (I call 'em bipolar) with their ability to cross over into the PC world as well as the Mac world.

They are worth the money - I should know, as I own three Mac laptops and use a fourth laptop at work.

Microsoft...Apple sells slower technology at higher prices. Get an HP, Dell or Toshiba...or if you want the best, get Lenovo (IBM). Windows has much more flexibility and range of software availability than Mac OS.

The classic debate.

Here's how it breaks down. Macs are superior in numerous ways, but they cost quite a bit more and have less software selection.

Windows computers are good enough, cheaper, and have way more software available.
