Writing a successful fugue is very difficult. By all means follow the links above but I would urge you to study Bach's 'Art of Fugue'. He was the best composer of fugues of any time and actually wrote it as a sort of thesis on the technicalities of writing fugues. An understanding of Bach's music in this form is vital.
