I reallly cannot decide on a name so I am going to name based on what the child looks like. It will either have Auburn or red hair like my daughter. Possibly strawberry blonde like my own.

Seriously I don't think it really matters. You shouldn't be naming your son based on what colour hair he has. Nobody's gonna judge him that way, so you shouldn't either. I think that a name that's great will work perfectly on any child, regardless of their hair or (I've been seeing this A LOT) skin colour.
To be honest with you, I simply cannot answer your question because when the name Liam or Nicholas comes up, two boys; one with light and the other with dark hair comes up. I see Liams and Nicholases with dark and light hair.
I really think you shouldn't listen to anybody comments on whether they see Liam or Nicholas with light/dark hair because it really doesn't matter. There is no perfect name to match any shade of colour.

I picture Liam with blonde or light brown. Nicholas dark brown or black. Auburn or red goes better with Liam in my opinion.

My son is named Nicholas and he had dark blond hair when he was little. His hair is now a gorgeous shade of chocolate brown (he's a grown man).
Liam could go either way.

I know a little boy with blond hair named Nicholas but have never met someone with the name Liam, I would go with Liam just because it isnt as popular!! You cant go wrong because they are both great name!!
