I come from a long line of alcoholics. It is especially hard, and what little family I do have I rarely keep in contact with. Life growing up was miserable, and it has never become much better. I use to cope by being just like them, drugs and alcohol. However I fortunately found help and have been clean and sober for 5 years and try my hardest to keep in contact with them every now and then just to be cordial, but I try to avoid them as much as possible. They are all miserable, and I can't subject myself around it.

Yes. Every family has a little issue but its either you accept it or you don't. Be miserable or move on. I have a first cousin that took away our grandparent back to their native country so that he could keep their social security/retirement checks & even change his last name to be our grandparents name he has a now has mansion & land there. We hate him what he did I didn't have even a chance to say bye to my grandparents before they left the country, it but WTF. We still talk to him. I just believe in the higher power time will come. Many more bitterness, abuse, etc. but I don't let it get to me because I know whats done is done, cope with it, move on & not to repeat it, prevent it, educate others, I have my own life & my goal is not to be like that a negative way, even if I don't see family members they can see me my doors are always open & thats my way.

Yes, and it all how you see things, I was abused as a child then and adult, it is all how you chose to cope, by being hateful yourself or by teaching others that a little compassion can go a long way.

For people that go through hard time, it must be hard always.
From my end I did not have any such experiences.
