I'm attending Northern Michigan University next year (fall 2008) which is going to be a huge change from the Houston heat I've grown so used to. I'm not quite sure how to bundle up stay warm, or Winter activities. Help/ Advice?

(This being typed in early November while I'm sweating in a tanktop with the fan on!)

I am from Michigan and I am used to the weather so I mean I don't think its too bad. The winters have been warmer last few years. The thing that concerns me is the suffering economy and the resultant tuition hikes. But follow your dreams. I bet where your going to school there's skiing and stuff. why N. Michigan University?

You will learn to dress in layers.
Its not a big problem normally because you arent outside for very long. You will want a parka, and boots , hat, gloves and scarf for working or playing outside . If you are starting in the fall you can get advice from other students and buy stuff there. Walmart has really cheap stuff for hats , gloves . You may want to spend more on a nice parka, but if you are working or playing outside you tend to warm up anyway.

I am in wisconsin and its a brisk 36 degrees outside . ;-)

I live in the Rio Grande Valley, but grew up in Indiana where it could really get cold. Here's my advice.

You need to beef up your wardrobe. The trick to successfully fighting cold weather is layering you clothing. So, for Christmas/Hannakuh or whatever and for your birthday, have people give you layer-type clothing.

Thermal Underwear
Long sleeves, especially some with turtlenecks (cotton)
Sweaters, to go over the long-sleeved shirts.
Couple of heavy coats with elastic sleeves to keep wind out(you may need to wear one while one is drying from snow) (I prefer coats with hoods)
Good warm gloves that are waterproof
Couple of scarves
Thermal Boots
Thick wool/cotton socks
A knit cap you can pull down over your ears.

If you want to check the kind of thing that really works, go to www,llbean.com, www.rei.com.
