I say precisely what you have just said. It is a cover up. The mere fact that the chief of police in Portugal in charge of the case was replaced and that therefore the case has obviously taken a different route smells of cover up. Let's not forget that one of the first things the new chief investigator said was
"I WANT QUICK RESULTS" LOLOLOL... "quick results" suddenly became more important than finding the truth, however long that may take. We see this sort of thing time and time again. Delay things, impede, in the hope that it will all die down eventually and public interest vanishes. OK, so public interest may eventually die down but at least it is not going to be me who has to live with the burden and remorse of the loss of Madeleine. It is them. -- Great post and great point so HAVE A STAR -
ADDENDUM --- the reply from Portugal is to make some or all the Tapa friends 'official suspects' instead of removing the McCans from their list of suspects.
Response to Kevin H -- the aliens were Madeleine's own parents.

I get paid tomorrow and if the dishes aren't done in 30 minutes your allowance is not coming. Sent from the computer room to the living room. The only answer I got was the sound of running water in the kitchen.

What was so important he couldn't wait until after his meal etc?? Not good manners at all........
I think it stinks of a cover up also, too many things have been ignored or allowed to be dismissed as unimportant. 14 texts the night his daughter goes missing? should definitely be looked into.. But the McConns have been given so much time to get rid of evidence and come up with new 'incredible' excuses, no wonder they are so cocky......
They are making a complete mockery of an innocent child who just needed to be loved and looked after...... This whole case makes me want to vomit.....

I agree totally with what you say .Someone is wrapping the McCanns and friends up in cotton wool and they have become the untouchables. If the whole Tapas gang underwent vigourous interviews then one of them would crack then the prosecutor would have all the proof her needs. Yes definitely a cover up coming from "the top".

I'm thinking patience and surely you do not believe all that you're reading right now, why would the police in either country tell or even leak any intentions they may have? The truth will come out eventually, too many people know what happened for it to be otherwise.

Yep 14 text messages and 14 bottles of wine. I think he was texting the Tapas Bar cellers to save time between bottles.

Its a cover up, before we know it the Birmingham lab will be saying there is Portuguese *** ash in the samples again and that will be it.
The McCanns are going to walk on this one and if the Tapas 2 do not change the statement this is going to run and run.
It annoys me, as someone knows exactly what was going on that night, and they are keeping quiet. Its sick.
*edit* lol cig ash then
