Boiling the water nowadays is a precaution, not a necessity. It is still recommended in case the water supply in your area should becomes contaminated and you are not warned in time since babies and the elderly and those with compromised immune systems can be affected by even very minor episodes of contamination. Also if you have a cistern or a well you should boil since you never know what might be in the water for contaminants. If you have a good water purification system installed you probably don't need to worry about boiling water as long as you make sure filters and such are changed regularly and you make sure the system is working by having the water tested regularly by the health department.

I personally use a name brand bottled water since it has to pass strict quality control measures. My doctor told me that if baby is healthy there is no problems with this, if baby develops any problems that cause issues with his immune system then I will have to boil water no matter where it comes from. So far, 3 months old and has never even had a case of the sniffles or even any bouts of diarrhea or constipation.

The only things that you really need to be concerned about being sterile are the bottle nipples (because formula can get trapped in the small holes and grow bacteria if not boiled), and any toys or pacifiers that go in his mouth should be sterilized or washed in the dishwasher at least once a week. This also helps to prevent or minimize the risk of getting thrush (fungal infection of the mouth, makes the tongue go white and very common in children under 6 months. Treatment is only really needed if it becomes uncomfortable and baby won't take the bottle or to make the parents feel better. Once their body grows up a bit it will clear up on it's own in most cases).

You can use cold tap water, it doesn't have to be cooled boiled water. Tap water has flouride that gives your baby healthy teeth. If you use a bottle warmer, mix the water with the formula, shake the bottle until the formula dissolves. Then, put the bottle into the bottle warmer. If you don't use a warmer, you're stuck with the boiled water. After your baby turns 1 years old, you can start feeding him regular cow's milk. So the answer to your question is 12 months.

I always just used bottled water and heated it up in the microwave before adding the formula. I don't see any reason to have to boil the water.

So long as your baby is not immuno-compromised (ie disease or preemie), and you live in an area with a safe water supply (not a well, etc), then you do not have to ever boil the water. Mainstream water supplies are safe these days.

My son's doctor tol me that since we had a PUR water filter on our sink we could just use warm water from the tap. We didn't have to mess with boiling and cooling the water.

I have never boiled water for my childrens bottles and they are both alive and well. I of course live in town so we have a city supply of water. Out at the farm (mom's) we use bottled water.
