i noticed how rubbish i am. im pretty depressing doom and gloom myself. my soh is non-existent (unless drunk).

everyone has their own problems in life. they want happy positive people to be around them. to make them laugh and forget bout things. let the postivity run...i couldnt provide this.

i just said dont worry. not sure if i helped muchh.

how do you cheer friends up?

Positivity doesn't mean being happy all the time, because no one is. It means being committed to looking at things with as much optimism as possible, and making the best of even challenging experiences (since all experience has instructive value). You're not obligated to cheer a friend up...maybe forgetting his troubles would be the least healthy thing for him to do, anyway. Friends are best employed as listeners who allow their friends to work through their issues in their own time...being there for them is of enormous value, and it sounds like you can do that just fine.

Girls tend to cheer friends up by endlessly going over and over the issue in question till the thing's been chewed to death. Which is not necessarily that life-enhancing either.

Sometimes a well meaning 'don't worry' is good enough.

Sometimes you can't but at least your friend probably realised you were trying, next time suggest you go out somewhere maybe!!
