Apparently someone does it every 3 secs. I only did it once when I was driving several different cars for my job. Fortunattely I realised before I'd put much in and 'diluted' the diesel with petrol so it didn't cause problems!

If you're talking about putting the "wrong" octane grade of gas in, I've done that. I used to do it consistently. That really doesn't make much difference. There may be a slight lag in power if you use a lower octane fuel, but it doesn't cause any damage.

Putting in diesel instead of gasoline, or vice versa - never done that. That causes big problems in either type of engine. Gasoline will destroy a diesel engine, and diesel won't burn in a gasoline engine.

I was in the South of France and went to the petrol station to fill up before heading home to Le Havre. I put in about 5 gallons before I realised. I stopped and continued with petrol and hoped all would be OK. It was more of a wish as I assumed I was doomed. I started the car and it went well. There was a bit of smoke but it went OK. Every time I passed a petrol station on the motorway I filled up with petrol and the diesel was diluted all the time . By the time we got home it was all petrol. I was so relieved. Had the car had a Carburettor then I would have been sunk but as it was, at that time a fuel injected engine the diesel was not a problem. As a matter of interest I managed to get an extra 7 miles per gallon over that return journey.

Thankfully, no! A friend of mine did, she had a diesel car and filled in with petrol, it cost her £200 to have the engine/tank drained but what she was most annoyed about was having to pay for the £40 petrol!!

My dad has a diesel with two tanks in it, and he's used to petrol vehicles.
He put petrol into the main tank and when he realised, he drained the wrong tank!!! He had 80litres of petrol mixed with a little diesel to try and find a use for!!!
Funniest thing dad has ever done

One time I put 32 gallons of gasoline in my diesel truck. This was in Arizona. There the high octane gas has a green handle. In Calif. Diesel has a green handle.
It ended up costing me two days delay and $500.00 in repairs and disposing of the contaminated gas.
I felt like an idiot but the mechanic told me that truckers have done the same thing but with 500 gallons of gas.
That made me feel like just an ordinary moron instead of a complete one.

My niece who probably should be a blonde spent the greater part of 10 mins trying to figure out why the diesel nozzle wouldn't fit in her unleaded car's fuel tank.

But no, I've never put the wrong fuel in.

Oh yea....but it wasn't my fault....the gas station that i filled up at had marked the tanks wrong so therefor when the gas man came he put diesel in the unleaded tank. I filled her up and made it one block. Then my car just died. Needless to say the gas station got to buy me new motor. Really weird I know but it is a true story.

Of course!!! What made it worse was that I had spent 5 years working at a petrol station at the time, preaching to the customers not to do it!!!

Yep, when I was a teen, I put diesel in my dad's gas powered pick-up. He was so mad! The tank had to be drained. Luckily I stopped when the smoke started kicking out like crazy.
