It sounds like Gopal had to make some choices about how to act. Should he act like Parisians or like he was taught in his own country? The question wants you to discuss the choices he had to make and describe what the conflicts were.

I haven't read "The Oyster" but the first quote means that you need to adapt to the customs of the place you're in and the second means that you shouldn't compromise your own values.

conflict means differences; usually in angered situation. Theres a confliction of views, because they are different to each other, and in a way argue.
