It's The Golden Compass, and when will fanatical Christians learn that to try and barr someone from something only increases it's appeal? Look at The Passion of The Christ for instance. that movie was as popular as it was because they made SUCH a big deal about not seeing it.
I just got done reading all 3 of these books (it's a trilogy the first one being The Golden Compass) of the His Dark Materials trilogy. And for the record the "anti-God" undertone did not become really prominent until the 3rd one.
These were excellent books, and yes they are trying to battle the "authority" which could be considered God, but it's not very harsh about it. It's more like this guy trying to build a second kingdom of heaven. Great books, good story, and when I read it I NEW this would happen when they read the movie.
It's a great fantasy fic, really well done, and they really don't push the "God is bad" envelope too much.
Go see it.
That's Freedom of Expression baby, and I'm a Christian, BUT, the REAL God cares about what is in your heart, not if you go see a movie that has a slight undertone about a person trying to build a second "Kingdom of Heaven." and the people that are protesting this movie should probably read the book before they hop on the soap box, because in the first book/ movie, they don't even mention the controversial thing, they don't even get to that until the second and third ones. The first is more like an adventure across different places and universes to save her friend, it doesn't get into the "God issues" until the second, mainly the third book.

The Movie is called th golden Compass, and the author is a renowned athiest. As far as actually killing God, that does not happen in the movie, though the film is based on the first in a trilogy of books that the focus is to try and kill God. Personally I am going to have to look into this a bit before I alow the kids too watch. I will probably read the books to determine how anti God it is. There are some good links given to yo on this page. I recommend finding out as much as you can so you can make a decision for yourself.

Sounds like someone is exaggerating. I haven't heard anything quite like that.

The only that Nicole Kidman has worked on recently, but has not yet been released is The Golden Compass. It's based on the book series by Phillip Pullman. It is a fantasy book, and there is a "God" figure in the book called "The Authority", who happens to be oppressive. It is not exactly the same as the traditional God you are thinking of, and the book does not take place in the world exactly as it is today. As I said, it is a work of fiction, and a fantasy novel. If you'd like to read the synopsis for it, check the Wikipedia page.

She is also working on filming Australia and The Reader.
Australia is a WWII drama set in...you guessed it, Australia.
The Reader's synopsis on IMDB says: "In postwar Germany, a young man’s decades-long obsession with an older woman runs headlong into a war crimes trial, where he learns an awful truth."

Need (IMDB: "A prosperous New York therapist (Watts) discovers that one of her patients, a suicidal woman (Kidman), is having an affair with her husband.") and The Lady From Shanghai (IMDB: Set in the 1930's, a mysterious woman who claims that she came from Shanghai has a dangerous affair with a spy.) are in the pre-production stage right now. None of those are actually completed films yet.

It is "The Golden Compass" that they are throwing hissyfits about. Why they are so distressed about the movie but didn't fuss over the books I'll never know.

According to imbd.com, it might be a movie called The Reader or Australia. It doesn't give a long definite story line though but both are coming out in 2008.
