Hello,
My husband has a 1998 Honda Accord with less than 100k miles. The transmission went out and it is insane what they're asking to replace it. We've heard that a lot of people have had similar problems with the transmissions of this model.
Does anyone know if Honda will fix it? A couple of years ago, my husband received a letter saying something about the transmission so he took it to a dealer and had it "fixed".
What can we do to get Honda to fix it? Any other suggestions besides replacing the car will be helpful also.

I said LESS than 100K and he's had all the required maintenance done to it.

the recall that applied to this car was for a problem with the possible failure of the gear locking device that keeps the transmission in Park and not allowing the car to roll when its in Park.
The warranty extension that Honda had for automatic transmission failures on the Accords did not apply to this year car. Yes, a lot of Accord owners had transmission problems but those cars were all 2000-2001 models that had a different transmission from the one in your husbands car. Honda extended the warranty on those cars to 7 years or 100,000 miles whichever came first. Almost all of them are beyond the 7 years now.
I agree that the failure is seemingly premature for the mileage and the reputation for reliability that Honda has. I can't speak for Honda, but you can plead your case to them by calling 1-800-999-1009. If they are able to do anything for you they'll let you know.
Even if you could get them to pay for a portion of the repair you would save a lot of money. You can get remanufactured transmissions from Honda now and when Honda pays for a part of the repair they usually discount the price of the transmission to the warrranty price which is much less than the regular retail price for the parts. The labor is the same regardless of whether or not Honda participates in the repair.
I can't hurt to call them to see if they'll do anything for you.

The labor rates may vary, but Honda should only charge you for that piece.
Your case will be easier to make if you can demonstrate that you've done your due diligence to maintain the car...should look clean, preferably have records of maintenance, particularly transmission fluid changes. Also, performance modifications may present a problem in the eyes of some dealers...eg & especially turbochargers; even performance intake systems, headers & exhaust, though technically, these are external bolt-ons.
It would be helpful to do visit the link I've provided & print a copy so you can familiarize youself with the issues & what your rights are...before contacting a dealer.
Also, I understand that the actual problem has mostly manifested itself with failed 2nd gear clutch packs...possible inferior components, or marginally engineered design.
If you decide to keep the car, adding an accessory transmission cooler has been recommended by some since lowering the transmission fluid temperature has been shown to extend equipment life.
BTW, I drive an '00 Accord V6 @ 93K miles...so far, so good.

I am ahonda tech.. The deal goes like this. The transmission is under warenty but the labor is not. it will take 6 hrs of labor thats 89.95x6. thats all you need to know. I also bet your accord is a v6

I actually just read about people getting free replacements on trans. for Accords with certain mileage on a google search. Try that.

The car has 100k miles on it!
Stop looking for free stuff and just pay for a new transmission!
Edit: Your right..
Some people have had problems with Accords LESS than 100k miles, but most people just pay for it and don't B**** about it.
Stop trying to get them to pay for your old car.
