You'll want to get a wireless router that's at least 802.11G or faster. They now have super G and N standards that exceed the regular G standard, but G is still pretty fast. Any of the brand name routers will work fine. I've used Belkin and Netgear with great success. Then of course you'll need a wireless card that is compatible with the maximum speed of your router, but also backward compatible with the slower B standard. The B standard is what's usually used in cafes and libraries and stuff.
Security is a huge concern, so make sure you set up your router with a WEP code, or another security protocol, that encrypts your communication. It's not difficult at all. Most modern routers have a wizard of some kind that will walk you though the process. Then you just need to set up your wireless connection to work with a Wep password. If you're using Windows, here's some pretty good instructions from Microsoft, using linksys equipment.

As far as getting a good signal, the N standard will help a lot, but it's more expensive. If you don't want to pay for the N standard, you'll have to just experiment with where you place your router. Usually you'll want to place it in the middle of your house somewhere. But if you have a 2 or 3 story house, you might have to install a repeater somewhere.
Good luck!

You are going to need a wireless router (I have a linksys if that helps), a wireless laptop card (if your computer is not wireless capable already) and depending on your preference, you could also get a wireless NIC card for your desktop as well. If you don't want to do that, you can leave your desktop the way it is. The brands don't really make a difference (just like with most things) When you pay more for a brand name product, all you are really paying for is the name itself. They all do the same thing. Basically it will set up like this: your internet connection will come out of the wall, into the modem, from the modem to the router, and the router will connect wirelessly to your laptop. Like I said before, you could make the desktop wireless as well if you don't like all the wires everywhere, but you don't have to because the desktop can just connect to the router via an ethernet cable.

What you can do is get a Netgear or Linksys Wireless router and do a basic set-up, for the PC @ home if its a desktop, then you'll need a Wireless Card, or Wirless USB adapter, apart from that the setup is straight forward with software from the router on a CD-ROM

I also recently bought a laptop and i already have a PC i didn't know anything about wireless. I don't know if you are in United Kingdom but if you are i bought a wireless router called D-Link DKT-710 wireless G adsl2 + starter kit. It contained a wireless router and a wireless G usb adapter, from ARGOS. I set up the router on my laptop and plugged the usb adapter (called a dongle, which i didnt know) into my PC and it works fine just as fast as my normal broadband router did!! I hope this helps.

Check if your router is wireless and your laptop is wireless. If you need either get a wireless network card and a wireless router (I recommend netgear for style) If you have very thick walls (mine are stone) you can say goodby to getting a good signal through other parts of the house.

your wireless speed between your router and your laptop will far exceed your ADSL speed, in summary, it will not affect your broadband speed. choose whatever wireless setup you want, but some manufacturers i.e. belkin can be tricky to make your network 'secure'...i.e. require a onetime password to connect to your router to prevent your neighbours using your connection.

You want a wireless router that is compatible with both your computers and is rated the fastest.
Go someplace like CompUSA and explain what you are looking for and they can give you some options.
