Well the UN is just another extension of power, like the Unilateral Commission.
If the UN didn't exist, there would be another formed in its image. Because the goal is a one-world government and the UN or something like it, helps realize that goal.

The world would be much better off if it didn't exist.
The whole premise of the UN is to give an equal voice to small Nations. In theory, this is a good idea, but it's not very practical. It's much like giving equal voice to all members of a family, including the children and the dog.
The reality of the UN is that the US, like the parents in a family, has to support all of these equal members, but doesn't get a commensurate vote, and is quickly outnumbered when it comes to making decisions about how it's going to allocate it's assets.
All in all, a very bad idea, and one that will only work as long as the parents, (the US) allow it to.
