You sure can.
Go to your local abuse prevention council (you'll find the number in the emergency help section of your phone book).
They will help you get the papers filed.

In the meantime....get out of there & don't go back. Men who hit women do not change for the better.

Heck yeah. You don't have to have bruises to get a restraining order on someone. All you need is to feel threatened or like you are in danger in that person's presence which you obviously are. Get a restraining order ASAP then pack up your stuff and move. Mail him the divorce papers. The next time you should see him should be in a court with a judge finalizing your divorce. If you don't get a restraining order, bruises will be the least of your problem.

Yes. Take pictures of the bruises and any damage done to the house. Keep a journal of any date and incidences. Call the police and file a report every time. Always write down what happened, get witnesses to as much as possible and take pictures. You need this documentation

Contact your local abused women's shelter and they will give you other ideas, counseling, assistance and even help with the restraining order.

Good Luck!

You probably should have done it immediately. Did you go to the doctor or otherwise have the abuse documented? Did someone take pictures of your bruises? Most likely you can get a restraining order but statistics show that restraining orders exacerbate abusive relationships. You would do better to hightail it off to a women's shelter or contact a women's group who could help you get out. File a police report.

First, contact the police. Have proof of the bruises; pictures taken at the doctor's office works best because the proof is taken by a third party, and a medical professional.

Second, get a lawyer and ask for a restraining order.

In the meantime, get somewhere SAFE...if all else fails, get Tommy to break his legs...lol (Tommy's out of work, since HBO cancelled the Sopranos.)

I hope that everything works out for you.

Yes you likely can, but you need to document the incident and report abuse to the police. You need to take pictures of your injuries and go to your local courthouse and talk to the clerk of court about where and how to file. You will likely have to fill out a form for the Judge and you will want to show all evidence with it. The judge will look it over and tell you of his decision. Be prepared for a hearing and see if you can get an attorney. Don't tolerate abuse, I know it's hard to be in this situation. There should be some advocate groups in your area for battered spouses (women), find them too and if you can... get out of the house and to a family member or friends where you can be safe. Best of luck to you.

You should go as soon as possible to the doctor as a witness and take photographs of the bruises. Then ask the doctor what you should do about a restraining order.

It shouldn't matter when he hit you. If you have evidence, which are your bruises, you can definately call the police and get a restraining order. You should also get a divorce too.

Yes. It's a human right to feel safe and you have evidence, although having the restraining order would kind of stop you being his partner, but who wants someone abusive really?
