As most have already mentioned, you can file from January for the preceeding year. The regular due date is April 15 of the following year.
If there is a refund coming to you on a return and you haven't filed by April 15th of the next year, you have three years following to claim that refund. So now, you have upto April 15 of next year to claim a refund on the 2004 tax year.

Anytime from January 1st to April 15th. However if you are a wage earner you can't file until you receive your Forms W-2 which will generally be sometime in January. They aren't due out until the 31st and many employers take all the time available to get them out.

The IRS will accept efiles somewhere around the middle of January. If you mail it, you can send anytime after the first of the year. In either case you have to wait until you get all your tax forms like W-2's or 1099's.
