Saltalamacchia is a great prospect, and the Red Sox need a reliable catcher for the future. I would love to have Saltalamacchia, because he would improve so much with Varitek's mentorshipness (sorry I made up a word). But Ellsbury is the future leadoff hitter and outfielder of the Sox. They need him as a spark in their lineup, and a reliable bat to make up for Drew and Crisp, and dont' forget Manny is getting on in his years.
I think both will be impacts no matter where they are. I just wish the Sox could have both :(
(By the way-if the Red Sox made this trade, all the teenage girls who became fans because of Ellsbury would probably hunt Theo down and burn him at the stake)

I saw that, too, on rotoworld, I think. Anyway it seems pretty laughable. The Rangers need Salty and the Sox need Ellsbury. The Sox don't need a guy like Salty and, well, the Rangers could use all the help they can get. But I don't think this trade will happen.

I really believe the Red Sox will sign their team captain to a new contract, what kind of a message would it send to the rest of the team if they were not willing to do that. I also believe the Red Sox think they really have something in Ellsbury for the future, he has speed and fits in nicely with the team. However, if you just look at your suggested trade without the underlying factors I pointed out it would really not be a bad trade for both teams, but only if they don't resign Varitek.

Even as a Yanks fan, I will give it to Ellsbury. He's a tremendous talent. I could see the Sox trying to aquire Saltalamacchia using Crisp and a young pitcher as bait. Maybe package another player or two.....Theo isn't stupid. He'll keep Ellsbury.

hahaha Red Sox trade Ellsbury?! That would be the stupidest thing they could EVER do!!
He is our future. He is one of the fastest base runners around. He is yet to be caught stealing a base. He hit 29 out of 30 games he played in the regular season. To give this up would be silly. I can't see Varitek leaving the Sox. I can see him re-signing.

I don't think that would be a good deal for the Red Sox. Salty is an up and coming player but I think Ellsbury has more of an upside than him.

The RED SOX farm system has 3 other catchers they are grooming to possibly take over for TEK when HE decides he's done. Then he'll take a coaching position with the RED SOX and have his number retired like the best catcher in baseball deserves to have.

Ellsbury is here to stay, and they'd never trade their team captain. Varitek is the face of the Red Sox, lets face it :)
Go Sox 08!
