It's very interesting that it really does vary from region to region, and even within a state. In North Carolina, "barbecue" usually describes a type of pulled pork that has an "Eastern" and "Western" style of bbq sauce depending on where you are in the state. In Texas, "barbecue" usually refers to beef brisket.
Elsewhere in the US it seems that the terms "bbq" and "cookout" are used to describe wonderful gatherings of family and friends, and are pretty much interchangeable.
Around our house you're welcome to call it anything you like, as long as you don't call us late for dinner. :-)

People on the East Coast call it a BBQ while in the South they call it a cook-out and eat BBQ....
