Kacky is not an idiot. You can get your car serviced only when it breaks down, or you can get it done regularly. It's the same with a sewing machine. Obviously regular services will keep it in better working order, but whether you feel it's worth paying the money is going to depend how often you use it. If you sew pretty much every weekend as a side business, it's more worthwhile to keep it serviced. If you only pull it out to take up your kid's trousers, you probably wouldn't bother.
The only way to get a working sewing machine under $20 is if someone is giving it away, or you pinch your mum's. I obtained a sewing machine for a friend. The machine cost nothing, but the service cost $95. If you don't know the history of the machine, or it hasn't been used in ages, you should get it serviced before you use it.

Kacky is an idiot - sewing machines just need to be kept clean and oiled regularly so they don't 'clank' and all will be well. If you can find one that cheap, ask the person selling to demonstrate what it can do and that it works.

If you want a new one, go online to HSN, and they sell a small sewing machine in different colors that has a bobbin, and can work on batteries or plugged in. Just click on this link and you'll see several that sell for 19.95 and under.

You might want to check yard sales or a trading post. I've never seen one that cheap in a retail store. Wal-mart has some for around $100.00. On occasion, Target will put them on sale for around $80+

Possibly, in your local yellow pages. But you'd have to spend another 50 or so to get it cleaned and tuned up, which must be done every year.
