it's winter time now and i'm trying to save some cash. is it better to turn down the furnace when we go to work and at night or leave it on a constant temp all the time? i heard you waste money by having the furnace start back up to raise the temp when thermostat kicks in.

Well, you do waste money whenever a furnace kicks on, but maintaining your house at a constant temp is much worse.

When you sleep, your body temperature drops as well. If you have a comfortable blanket, you won't freeze to death.

Spend $30 at the hardware store and get a programmable thermostat. You can set it to turn the furnace on an hour before you wake up. Then it will be warm for breakfast. When you go to work, it can go down again.

Turn it down, but by no means completely off, at night or when you leave. If you turned it all the way off, it would actually take more energy for the house to heat up again from square one. If you turn it down so it will run for short spurts throughout the day & night and keep the house at a decent temperature and then it will use less energy when you turn it back up.

It sounds like you may have a manual thermostat? I suggest you look into changing that over to an electric unit which would allow you to program it, and therefore it would automatically change temperatures for how you set it, rather than you having to remember to change it all of the time. We changed our unit over to an electric one, you just have to make sure yours would be compatible with doing that and then you can buy the units at lowe's, home depot and so on.

Yes, get a programmable one that you can set and "forget" that way it will turn the heat down to maybe 63-64 degrees when you are asleep or not at home. When you are home set it for around 66-67. We just wear sweats and warm clothing indoors... Also, a great money saving tip is to NOT use multiple appliances.. For example use the washer but, not together with the dryer. Use one or the other.. I've been doing this for about a yr. and I save about 1/2 on my electric bill. I also only run my dishwasher at night on time delay so it goes on around 4am and uses otherwise wasted hot water while we are sleeping...

Depends on the heating system. If you heat with a conventional furnace using gas, oil, or electricity, then yes. Have a setback thermostat installed and turn down the temp at night and when you are away during the day.

If you heat and cool with a heat pump, then no, it's a waste of effort and more officiant if the temp remains constant.

set it at 70 and leave it alone, it takes more heat to warm a house up than if its at a constant, heat. not only do you heat the house up but also the furniture absorbs heat, like driving your car on cruse, saves in the long run, we went from a $150. heat bill to $123. by doing this,

As a home Home Professional I think you should purchase a program-able thermostat so it will do it for you. They never forget. Also it will save you a lot cash and we all love cash.

For every degree you lower the thermostat you save money.

Keep your thermostat on 68 when you are home and while you are sleeping. Turn off your heater when you go to work. If it is freezing outside leave it on while at work and leave it set at 68.
