I am doing a schoo, project. I need to make the front of a newspaper from To Kill A Mockingbird. I Need some things that happened in the early 1900's. If you know some things in the book that would go well in a paper, that would help. Thanks

There were a lot of unions beginning in the 1920's, especially in the coal mines of West Virginia, and there were armed battles between the miners and the mine owners. The Matewan Massacre was the most important event (1920) in the formation of the United Mine Workers. There were horrible conditions in the mines, and the owners would send in the miners because so many people in Appalachia needed jobs. This relates to the Mockingbird story because it was a period of social upheaval in the US.

Also, women were given the right the vote, and Wyoming was the first state where women did cast their votes. Many people who didn't want women to vote tried to say that this was a Communist plot since communism had taken hold in Russia in 1917, so again this was a form of social upheaval.

Another form of upheaval was Prohibition, which was in effect during the entire 1920s. This Consitutional amendment created the situation where the mafia could take over the illegal trade in alcohol--the FBI was formed to fight this and the "communist insurgencies".

All these stories would have been on the front page of papers just about every day.

After WW! we went into Isolationism, leaving other people to their wars. I think hair bobbing for woman and wildness were also a part of it, though most of the films from that time really show what the wealthy and the young were doing, not the average person. My mom still has my grandma's long hair that was cut off with hair bobbing. This is an interesting study and shows a whole different America that ended with WWII and our emergence as the world leader. It was a wild heyday that came crashing down with the The Great Depression. Perhaps the 20's were the true end of American innocence. Jazz was still emerging as a new music.
WWI may have been the most heartbreaking of all the wars. !9th century military thinking with 20th century weapons. They sent soldiers out to be mowed down by machine guns, wave after wave after wave. . Double check this stuff please, it's been a while since I studied this subject.

Do research on the San Francisco earth quake of 1906. You can also do an article about the Great Depression of 1929. When millionaires jumped to their death because they woke up broke. The Wall Street crashed.

My mother was a prem baby born in 1923 and weighed just 3pounds. My grandmother kept her warm in the Aga type range - there was a blizzard at the time and the River Medway in Kent, England was frozen over!
There was the charleston and flappers to make society interesting too.

1. Black Sunday (the stock market crash that is considered the beginning of the Great Depression)
2. Leopold & Loeb, a couple of teenagers, committed what is recognized as one of the first "thrill kills." Big, big case.
3. Scopes (Monkey) trial - big trial about teaching evolution in schools.

Any encyclopedia and general American history book can help you (if you're going to "schoo" [sic], then I'm certain they have a library and history book, SOMEwhere!). ;)

Good luck!
