I think a space heater would work for your situation. Make sure that you get one with a thermostat so it's only running to maintain a particular temperature. Also, it's best to have the auto shut-off feature if the heater overheats or if it gets tipped over. That would reduced the chances of causing a fire.

i think the best be is to close off the vents in the unused part of the apartment. maybe keep one open to let some heat into the open area. then set the thermostat to the coolest temp that you would be comfortable, like maybe 66-68. then use a space heater to keep the room a little warmer. I would suggest the oil-filled radiator style. someone else already mentioned, they take a while to heat up, but once they get the room warm, they are very efficient, since the oil stays warm even after the thermostat turns off the heater...I would try it for a month, and see how much the bill is. now, if you don't pay the electric bill, don't worry, crank up the heat and be warm this winter....

Sorry, but a space heater is not energy efficent and can cause a high electric bill unless you are using 220 outlet. It uses more kilowatts than a heating system with a thermostat will. Does your heating that you use not have a thermostat? Instead look for one of these. My friend lives between Idaho and Oregan where it gets really cold in the winter. She swears by them. Try the ceramic heaters.

I had the same problem when I had a one bedroom apartment. But everytime I used my space heater I noticed that my electric bill was higher for that month. So Im really not sure what to tell you, except you may just want to keep your heater set at around 70 somthing. Maybe then it wouldn't get so warm.

You might try one of those oil-filled electric heaters. They seem to be cost-effective, safe, and efficient.
They do not put out a great deal of heat all at once, but once they reach the temp setting you dial in, they maintain the warmth you need pretty well.
You are right though, you dont need to keep the entire place heated.

I use space heaters to help in the winter as I have natural gas, but it's best not to let them run all night because they can be a fire hazard. Use one during the day only, or get an electric blanket ... they're also energy efficient.
