It depends. My older, now 20-something nieces preferred gift cards to their favorite stores, but my niece who is getting ready to turn 18 has always preferred old-fashioned presents! She loves Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy products, so I often buy her a set of those, with a scented candle. She also likes Starbucks, so I'll usually tuck in a Starbucks card, too ... it's just enough for 1-2 cups, but it allows her to grab a little treat on her aunt while she's out with her friends.

I would offer the following kind of presents :
an ipod
a digital camera
a massage at a beauty parlour (if she likes massages)
a computer
a nice piece of jewellery (something simple but elegant like a silver bracelet).
a DVD set of her favourite TV series ...
P.S. I wouldn't choose to buy clothes because you may not know her taste well enough.

Depends - sister, aunt, girlfriend? Think about a gift card for sister or aunt. Girlfriend would probably appreciate it if you knew what her favorite perfume is or if she NEEDS something she can't afford, you could come to her rescue. If you can't think of anything else I guess a gift card could work for her too. (Just be sure to put it into a nice birthday card and write a really sweet note inside.) Given with her favorite flowers and a promise for a picnic would be a bonus.

My 17th birthday is on Monday, so i'll just list the things i want, but keep in mind that every person is different.. Depending on her tastes and likes/dislikes, she'll probably like one or more than one of these:
-scarves
-jewelry
-perfume/makeup
-music (CD or iTunes)
-gift certificates to stores that carry things she likes
accessories
-car (if you're in that position financially, and a parent or close relative)
-accessories for her car, if she has one. seat covers, cute beads and signs, bumper stickers, etc.
Another fun idea is an updated goodie bag.. fun little things like stickers, lipglosses, scented markers, candy necklaces, etc. Most teen girls love gifts like that, but goodie bags are often overlooked as childish.. If you're a friend, you can update it with mini alcohol bottles (if you're partying that night, use a designated driver) and fun products such as the "Bit-ch" and "Sl-ut" toiletries line (Google "bit-ch" soap or "sl-ut" soap, without the dashes.).
also, you know her better than a bunch of strangers could, just think about what she has that she likes and buy in that same vein.
and lastly, never underestimate the value of homemade gifts, they're from the heart and often the best!

well jewelry is always good maybe an ipod if she likes music or books if she likes to read or a craft kit also since you don't spend time with your daughter a day out with her would be good along with a small gift too that way both of you will bond even if its going to the mall or out for icecream.
