Loren is right.

It didn't take 4 years to clean up, that's just how long Exxon worked on it before quitting and leaving the mess. It also directly affected much more than 1300 miles of shoreline. Most of it you couldn't see, but there are still places you can turn over a rock on the shore and find tar from the spill. Some of it sank to the sea floor also, and nothing was done about that at all.

18 years later, Exxon is probably about to win the battle not pay 2.5 billion dollars it was ordered to pay by the courts. With tax breaks directly due to the spill, insurance, and manipulating public funds for the clean up, it's likely Exxon actually made a profit from the spill even after the loss of oil is figured in.

Exxon Valdez I'm guessing, right now.

But all it'll take will be another 3-4 appeals and it will turn out that the Exxon Valdez didn't actually crash, the crew went ashore & planted many different forms of trees & plants to help the environment and the people of Alaska must pay them $25 trillion in compensation.

It's amazing what you can achieve in court, if you are worth $429,567,000,000-ish.
