A solute is a substance dissolved in a solvent. It can be an ion or undissociated compound, such as glucose. The solutes in a solution contribute to the osmolarity of the solution. When there is a semi-permeable membrane, which allows water to pass but not the solute, water moves to the side of higher osmolarity.
