Mount Everest always was the biggest mountain - even before it was discovered.
K2 was believed to be the biggest mountain, before Everest's discovery.

From its base on the ocean floor, Mauna Loa is 33,132 ft., or 10,099 m high. That's taller than Mt. Everest is high, and it's just a single mountain!

It was Chomolungma or Qomolangma (Tibetan: à½à½¼à¼à½à½¼à¼à½à¾³à½à¼à½) or Sagarmatha, but no-one knew it was the tallest mountain in the world!
