This is my 12 year old daughters history roman homework and she has to explain what this quote means. Please help!!

OK. Presumably this refers to the Roman Empire. Food had to be grown, so places like Egypt and Sicily were good crop growing areas. Crops could also be grown in parts of Africa, but Africa was also a source of supply for exotic animals for the Circus. Lions etc.Hope this helps.

The Roman Empire needed to expand continuously in order to provide increasing wealth to its population. As a result the staple requirements of the Empire were drawn in from a wider area and hence the quote that the further flung parts of the Roman empire provided the agricultural products that Rome at the centre of the Empire, needed to live on
