I believe what you see on TV is pretty accurate, depending on location. In the wealthy middle American suburbs, Dawsons Creek, Friday Night Lights are pretty accurate. Inner City schools, I personally do not know about, but have heard the news stories and I think TV is a little over the top.
I was into showing horses, so I hung out with my rich "horsey" friends. We were usually gone on Fridays and we did our homework together at the shows on weekends.
We had 3 black kids (out of 2600) in the 11th & 12th grades, so there were no "gangsta's" or "thugs" in my school. LL Cool J and NWA were listened to, but not by the majority.
I PROMISE you that there are cliques that don't get along. In the late 80's it was the "Jocks" (sports players and cheerleaders) who HATED the "geeks" (lesser affluent, nerdy, band & drama types) And the "punkers" (pre-goth punk rockers) who hated the "metal heads" (80's hair band air guitarists) The "stoners" (pot smokers) liked everybody, especially the lunch lady!

That is one of the first things that I have heard about America (from someone in a different country) that is actually true. Most high schools have all kinds of cliques...but I am pretty sure it is that way in other countries too. When I was in High School, I was probably considered a geek because of my friends I hung out with (all straight A students).

There are cliques and they aren't always so over exaggerated or sometimes on t.v they are under exaggerated. There are a lot of people who do things like this but it is everwhere in just about every country and some people aren't in groups and do things like that by themselves. But it is the people who play sports, the girls who wear make up, ones in theater, just plain bullies, and nerds and geeks that are usually put into a group but it isn't always that bad sometimes it is though.

Actually, high schools in the US really are normally full of various cliques. You have your jocks (often football players), the cool kids (often rich enough to have the best clothes), the in-betweens, and the geeks and nerds. I was actually one of the nerds and I was often bullied. You're actually lucky if you attended a school that wasn't so cliquish.

What you see on tv is an overexaggeration of high school.
Most high schools will have some cliques...I think as a teen, you can't get away from that. But, it's not usually as bad as you see in on tv--the cliques do intermingle and get along. You will naturally have conflict, but that is what teenagers do.

Yes, it's true for the most part.
You did not ask a stupid question. Try to get into a high school that has diversity and low crime rate. You'll do just fine. Do a search on wikipedia.com or google.com for the best diverse schools in America with little or no crime.
