BP made more than a 100 billion dollars in 5 years. They have more lawyers than the cigarette company. In fact, they gave a billion to Bush and Clinton. They bet on both. See which oil company import the most oil from the middle east. (whisper- BP)

Well, first off, BP doesn't own most of those gas stations. Gas stations are generally franchises. They are owned by their operators, who pay a fee to an oil company to display their colors and have a guaranteed source of fuel to sell.

Secondly, BP bought the Texas City refinery not long before the explosion. It was old and tatty, and the prior owners had scrimped horribly on maintainance, trying to make the figures look better. Since most of the management team was kept on by BP, they carried on the same way they had for years.

Yes, BP lost a civil suit for damages from the dead mens families, and it has been paid.

If every big company that had an accident that killed people shut down, we'd have to walk to work, as there wouldn't be an oil company, car maker, airline or railway company in the country.

Insurance coverage. I have seen many accidents in oil refineries. Actually, they are one of the better companies to take care of lawsuits.
