Yes, you should have a degree in zoology for this. if the college has an emphasis in animal husbandry or something along those lines even better.

What you should also do is try to work part time at your local zoo. if you can't do that, perhaps a zoo near the school you go to will work. Working at a zoo isn't all feeding and loving cute animals, there are aspects of it that are not all that glamorous. (Pay isn't great, animals are pretty dirty, animals die). So my advice is start working for a zoo as soon as possible to see if that is what you really want to do. you can usually get on part time as a keeper's assistant. It may be unpaid, it may not. Many people do enjoy it and there are some real rewards. Working with the animals is something that cannot be understated.

You probably will want to start off with a general zoology degree then tweek it as you go and you figure out what exactly you want to work with. For example if you figure out you want to deal with aquatics you would want to switch to marine bio or aquatic eco. Or if you want to work with birds you would want to swith to ornothology.

Starting out as a general first time keeper most zoos do not care what your degree is in as long as it is animal related. You will see that change though as you get further into the working world and you want to deal with more exact things and programs.

You might also want to look at having a minor in psych or animal behavior type classes, those are always a plus.

Also zoos LOVE experience, the second you are old enough get a job at a zoo. It does not matter if it is working with the animals or not, if you have the chance take it. Zoos tend to be the type of place that enjoy people who work their way up the ladder and have been able to experience other aspects of the zoo world. Even if you cannot get a paying job at a zoo they also have volunteer work. If you cannot do either of those get a job that still deals with animals, ie rescue center, pet store (non-puppy mill), vet clinic, etc.

Just start as soon as possible. Also check out the AZA.org webpage, they always have job listings and you can see what is out there and what is required.
