I know to turn off the various pilots first, and how to relight them. Isn't this the only concern?

My gas is not off! I am removing an old furnace and want to cap the gas line before the furnace shutoff valve. I've decided to just let someone else do it. He said it would be $60-$80.

It isn't. For some reason many people (most of which have never dealt with gas) think looking at a gas line wrong will make your house explode. However, turning off the pilots is not enough, you need to close all valves also. After turning gas back on, check your new work for leaks with leak detector or soapy water-a leak will form bubbles in either one. Then turn on one appliance at a time, checking those valves/joints for leaks also. Follow by re-lighting the pilots.

The real question is why did you turn it off in the first place?

If you have changed the plumbing for the gas, those pipes could leak, and it may be too late by the time you find out. When the Gas Company technician comes out and turns the gas back on, he also checks all of the pipes for leaks.

The danger is that you leave some valve open and have a gas leak. However is not a big deal if you know what appliances use gas and have the pilot on. If you are going to do it yourself I recommend to close all valves and see the meter if there is anything going on, if not just turn everything on one by one.

If the gas company turned it off, it should be locked. It is illegal to remove the lock. Gas piping is very dangerous and all lines should be checked for leaks before gas is allowed into the lines.

Why is your gas off is an important question. If its off due to a leak, you need a service tech to come back out, turn it on and check for leaks. If its off because of non-payment, it's illegial to turn it back on your self and you might find the police at your door wanting to ask you a few questions. Using gas without paying for it is theft.

they say this because its their job. if something happens, they are to blame. but as long as you know how to check for leaks(soapy water) your fine.
