how do i search the yahoo archives for an article i saw on Nov 5?

Go to the news page (I assume you are referring to a news article). At the top there is a search bar. Beside the search bar there is a drop down menu where you can specify to search only Yahoo News. Type in appropriate keyword(s) in the search bar and your article should appear in the results.

you go under your main yahoo page and see where it says yahoo web search....type in archives and it should take you to where you want to go.
