intake valve opens air fuel mixture enters cumbustion chamber, piston comes up and compresses the mixture spark plug ignites mixture, piston goes down comes backup exhaust valve opens and releases the burnt gases. also known as suck squeeze bang and blow. this is an oversimplification but basically what is happening.

4 stroke cycle is done in 2 full turns of the engine crankshaft and is known in rough term as "suck, squeeze, bang and blow"
down stroke=intake suck
up stroke=compression squeeze
down again=power bang
up again=exhaust blow
The control of the fresh fuel and the exhaust fuel is by means of valves so now it will become more complicated. Once the cycle is complete it starts over again and again and again you get the idea
Now that is as simple as it can be and all this creates 1 power stroke and it is that power stroke that carries it through the other 3 strokes plus enough power to control tha valve operation and if the designers have it right some spare power to operate the device that the engine is powering be it a lawn mower or a racing car
Put more than one cylinder together and multiply that power. Twin, 4 or 4 cylinders up to Vee 16 and everything in between
Hope that helps

When the fuel is ignited, the force of the explosion pushes the piston down so fast, the crankshaft just keeps rotating.
When you turn off the engine, the piston keeps moving up and down due to the centrifugal force of the flywheel.
Things in motion, tend to stay in motion.

If you want to see how a 2 stroke engine works - search for "2 stroke engine"
There is no driving force (like an electric motor) that turns the crankshaft. making the piston move up and down.
The crankshaft spins freely.
The driving force that moves the piston up and down is the explosion of fuel when ignited.
When the piston moves down, the crankshaft starts to rotate.
When the piston gets to the bottom of that stroke, it has no place left to go.
Since the crankshaft is rotating, it wants to keep rotating and pushes the piston up.
When the piston gets to the top of that stroke, it has no place left to go.
Since the crankshaft is rotating, it wants to keep rotating and pulls the piston down.
Then the spark plug fires, explodes the fuel, pushes the piston down causing the crankshaft to rotate and Vrooom Vrooom - the engine is running.

suck squeez pop blow. no diagram, but ...
cycle 1. piston goes down and intake valves open and sucks air into the combustion chamber
cycle 2. piston goes back up and all valves are closed and fuel is injected into combustion chamber along with spark from spark plug and fuel and air is compressed and all goes boom sending the piston back down
cycle 3. piston is going down what creates power
cycle 4. piston starts going back up and exaust valves open... sending exaust gas out the mainfold and out through the tailpipe and into the outside air wich we breath.
Hope that helps

Like the last guy said, they spin so fast that the engine can stay running even though it only fires on one of the four strokes.

Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow
1.intake valve opens pistons is pulled down sucking in air and fuel.
2.intake valve closes and piston is forced up compressing air and fuel
2.75 fuel is ignited
3.Piston is driven down
4.Exhaust valve opens and piston is forced up pushing exhaust out.
