Hi, I own a 2003 subaru WRX, turbo charge. THere is a little meeter on the handle with numbers like -.1 to .1, what does that mean?? thank you!

A turbocharger is a device which increases the engine's power by forcing more air into the engine than would be possible otherwise. It does this by using the exhaust gases to spin a compressor, which in turn pushes air into the motor. This is the same way that jet engines work, and indeed, both turbochargers and jet engines are a kind of machine known as 'turbines'. With more air, the motor can add more fuel, and make more power.

The gauge you mention shows how much extra air (referred to as 'boost') is currently being forced into the motor. You will notice that once you press on the gas, and as the engine RPMs go up, the boost gauge will start moving towards the positive side. When you let off of the gas, the turbo stops producing boost, and the indicator on the gauge goes to a negative number (this is known as vacuum, as the engine is literally sucking in air, since it isn't being forcibly fed air from the turbo).

A turbocharger compresses the air going into the engine to a pressure above atmospheric pressure. This means that in a given volume (your combustion chamber), you have more air. More air = more fuel = more power. The gauge you have in your car tells you what that pressure is.

It identifies the amount of BOOST (forced air injected into the intake) put out by the turbo charger.
