It's as safe as you want it to be.
You can make your profile private, have only people who know your e-mail/last name to be able to add you (you still have to approve them before they can see anything). You can make picture albums private, or for friends, ect.
And only put as much information on your profile that you would feel comfortable for anyone to know. (i.e. no school information, home phone/address information, etc.)
It all depends on how safe you want it to be.
