The first thing you need to know is that there is no such thing as 1,2 methylhexane. Maybe you mean 2-methylhexane.

One of the rules is to find the longest chain of carbon atoms in the molecule. For example, if you draw 1,2-dimethylhexane, you will find that it is actually 3-methylheptane.
