Yes, you are being silly. If the baby drowned, then water births would hardly be popular would they? Do you not think they would have stopped them by now?

the baby is in water inside you. the baby will go straight from the water inside you to the water you are in. he won't take his first breath until he "comes up for air". until then, he cannot drown. they're kind of like fish that turn into humans when they come out of the water...

Okay, so yes, the baby is coming from water, but into a different water! I was told that a water birth is not a natural delivery for babies and that by birthing in the water and having nurses, doc's and husbands hand and such in the water, it can be contanimated, and why would you want to place your newborn in something that was contanimated? Plus, there is still the possibility of them taking a breath in the water and the fluid will go straight to their lungs, possibly causing infection and/or pneumonia!

The baby won't take a breath until it hits the air.
I would make sure that if you choose to go to a birthing center...check the facility very well.

Dolphins and whales are one of the few mammals that give birth naturally in the water. They are normally born tail first. I think a water birth would best be used in the case of a breech birth. It would help prevent the baby trying to take a breath while he is still in the birth canal.

The baby is coming from water to water, it won't take a breath until it actually hits the air. if it was unsafe it wouldn't be such common practise.
