The first Thanksgiving was held on June 29, 1671 in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

On October 3,1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for the observance of the 4th Tuesday of November as a national holiday.

The website: www.pilgrimhall.org shows a list of the 53 that attended the meal. This meal was planned to boost the morale of the 50 or so remaining colonists.

Actually, the first Thanksgiving occured in Canada:
"In 1576 Martin Frobrisher and his English sailors gethered on a small island in what would later be the Canadian Arctic. They offered prayers and gave thanks for a hectic but safe voyage across the Atlantic. This was followed by a meal of salt beef, buscuits and peas. The very first Thanksgiving!"
