The first Thanksgiving was held on June 29, 1671 in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
On October 3,1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for the observance of the 4th Tuesday of November as a national holiday.
The website: www.pilgrimhall.org shows a list of the 53 that attended the meal. This meal was planned to boost the morale of the 50 or so remaining colonists.

The first Thanksgiving was when the pilgrims came to America with the NAtive Americans. Most kids learn that in elementary school.

Actually, the first Thanksgiving occured in Canada:
"In 1576 Martin Frobrisher and his English sailors gethered on a small island in what would later be the Canadian Arctic. They offered prayers and gave thanks for a hectic but safe voyage across the Atlantic. This was followed by a meal of salt beef, buscuits and peas. The very first Thanksgiving!"

i think it was 1620 when those pilgrim people came over here on the Mayflower ship and landed on a rock or something. they had turkey and stuffing and made friends with some indians and they all had a big dinner and gave thanks for - i cant remember, but they gave thanks. Happy Thanksgiving! :)
