Auto-Eroticism means you are turning yourself on. Self-abuse is you beating yourself up, physically (self-mutilation). The two words are antonyms. Wether or not you are using the right word depends on the context. What are you speaking about?

Auto-eroticism is simply masterbation. It does noy imply that you are doing anything "kinky" in the process. Auto-erotic strangulation is an accidential death while masterbating and using a noose or some other kind of device to block the airway. People do this to add an extra rush to climax but standing up to open the airway as they achieve an orgasm. People die during this by not standing up in time and passing out. This used to be ruled as suidice and not an accidential death, but in more recent years it has been recognized as an accident. I mean, really, who wants to go out that way!

Auto-eroticism is masturbation mixed with strangulation. Some people will tie something around their neck to temporarily cut off the circulation. I used to work in a medical library and I saw a study in a medical journal that talked about how many people have died from this; it's pretty scary! I dare you to google it! Self abuse generally just means plain old masturbation.

Some people get their sexual satisfaction f rom extreme stimulation, like half strangling themselves or their partner. They are probably people who have tried everything and just don't get a buzz now from good old shaggging. Some people have died during this experience. For example, this was the explanation for Michael Hutchins death, not suicide.
Pretty extreme I would say.
