I was born in 1956 and was mainly brought up by my grandparents because my father was in the army.
Nearly all the food available at the time was fresh and there was very little processed food available, Most parents/ grandparents had lived through the war a few years previously and had been used to growing their own vegetables.
Also we all got a lot more exercise when I was a child not many families could afford cars, so we walked a lot, cycled or used public transport. Television was very poor and we [children] spent most of our free time outdoors enjoying ourselves and getting exercise.
Also at that time there was very little "junk food" available to snack into and not too much money around to buy what there was.

People are getting more obese by minute here in the U.K. Like Global Warming, obesity levels are gradually increasing and as a result, having an affect on tlifestyles.

The are many reasons as to why people are getting more obese:

Firstly, children seem to have adjusted to technology. Let's take the new consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, for example. That console is so addictive and as a result, is teh cause for people to stay at home. Also, back then in the 1950s, such consoles didn't exist and therefore, the only way of really having fun was via activities.

Secondly, parents nowadays have grown more stubborn and as a result, not bothered to take their kids out the play a sufficient amount. They prefer to watch a football match on the TV or go to the pub. Like I said before, in the 1950s, TVs were rare and this obviously led to activities.

Thirdly, like technology, food has developed as well and there are more fast food restaurants to provide better foods (higher in fat). In addition to that, children get used to this routine and has a major affect on their weight. When compared to the 1950s, the amount of fast food restaurants are high.

And finally, the divorce rate in the U.K. has risen a lot. This affects the children as the children have to work around their parents whereas previously, they didn't. Parents argue over who should take who to their activities and it becomes a big mess. Once again, however, the divorce rates were low in the 1950s and is another major cause to the obesity levels...

The 1950's was the post war era, which means after the war. During those years, people grew their own food like vegetables. It is only in recent years, that fast food chains such as mcdonalds have opened up, providing us with easy options to eat unhealthy food such as burgers.

During the war, all food was on ration, so you didnt get a proper meal. Sometimes you ended up going hungry. People learnt how to survive, by growing their own crops, making their own bread. Their was no tv, computers, internet, mp3 players, etc, so children got more exercise and fresh air, running in the outdoors, riding their bikes. Children were expecting to help their parents, do chores, and be active.

Nowadays, people are too busy working irregular hours so they dont have time to make a proper meal. They end up eating junk food because its quicker.

We now live in different times with the invention on the computer and cars. Children are more lazy nowadays and so are the parents. This is why children are mor eoverweight than ever before these days.

A lot of it is to do with the generation your born up in and the influence of your parents.

Well, in the 50's there wasn't any fast food restuarants for a start and nowadays there is an emormous range of sugary cereals and fizzy drinks etc to choose from all of which are widely advertised for young children to soak up while watching TV which they didn't have in the 50's. There were not many TVs around then and certainly no computer games so kids actually played games outside and kept fit and healthy that way instead of eating junk nowadys and not burning off the calories because the kids are slumped infront of the tv or computer games. The obesity of kids today is an unfortunate sign of the times.

In the 1950s, there were less chemicals and artificial preservatives in food. All the unnatural chemicals that are in food today have worsened our problem with obesity and its many health complications. Food that is naturally grown is, in general, much healthier. Since unhealthy food was not as easily accessible in the 1950s, diets were comprised of healthier items and had less sugar. It is for this reason that people in the past had healthier diets and were less likely to become obese.

Because nowadays, we all have loads of money to spend on unhealthy foods; we can all afford to be ferried just about everywhere we want to go and don't ever have to walk - in the 50s, cars were rare but nowadays it's perfectly normal for a family to have 2; exercise isn't encouraged anymore; people are encouraged to sit behind desks all day then sit behind the tele all night; and most entertainment is found in playing computer games rather than going out and engaging in physical activities. It's not just the food, it's the whole lifestyle of today's youth.

Because of food rations in the world war2!!! (look this up in google for more info)
People had just the right amount of food to eat during the rations...
Also, because of computer games, and everyone having a TV, children have become more lazy cause al they wanna do is play on their playstations etc (these didnt exist back then)
Also, it was safer for kids to play outside than it is now
Kids have to be in at a much earlier time, and they dont get as much excersize
Also, more people have cars now than they did back then...
The list is endless!!!!

in the 1950 children had to entertain themselves without consoles and TV, so they tended to play outside. They would eat at home with family's more who used healthier meals that used fresh ingredients simply because they didn't know any different. Nowadays, family eat out allot because it is cheep easy and fast, and children sit at home all day at computer (i am living proof), TVs or consoles. Children now also have more freedom from parents, so they go out with friends, or alone, more so at these times they get what they want to eat. And usually, its not healthy.

Children born in 50's didn't have computers, play stations etc, so they played with their friends in or outdoors. Joined clubs, played sports. Went to Scouts, Guides, Sunday School. Also sweets were a treat only given on Saturdays or birthdays.
Also, processed food not readily available. Most food cooked from scratch

The availability and variety of food in the past 50 years has grown by a great degree
with the constant advertising of cheap meals from fast food restaurants, people are choosing it as an easy option.
As most people's jobs are in business, it allows only a short amount of time for lunch, so people resort to snacks and fast food meals which are high in fats.
Younger people abuse the huge amount of variety thats available. Unaware of simply not bothered about the effects of constant fatty snacks they choose them because they're easy and cheap.
Overall i would say that its due to the increase in advertising, variety, business and cheap prices. Its simply easier to get obese these days.
