Well Darthy.....a variety of answers there for ya. I like the ones that boast how the Republicans have cut taxes. They seem to forget the part about the Republicans also "borrowing" from Peter to pay Paul because they continue to spend more than the revenues that come in...therefore we have a trillion dollar deficit that is only getting worse. Not sure where they draw the line at "middle class" anymore, but if you are making over $100K a year you certainly qualify as being rich in my book. I think the class that really seems to get the heel of the boot for the most part is the working class poor. We make too much money to qualify as "poverty level" but we make far far far less than $75,000/yr. This is the people who are struggling to live the American dream - hard working, two income families with children who can't do anything more than live from payday to payday. They don't own fancy houses or fancy cars and may or may not have health insurance but still don't go to the doctor unless they are beyond home remedies because they can't even afford the co-pay for the doctor's visit or the prescription. So as far as this "great economy" that you boast about, I'm glad it is working for you. As gas prices continue to go up, you will feel another "trickle down" effect which will hit every family. My biggest fear is that we are repeating the history of the last turn of the century....only this time, the depression that will follow will be 10x more violent than the last.

There is a big difference between the taxes needed to provide essential service and the taxes wasted on give-away programs. I have no problem paying the taxes that are needed so we have roads. Roads benefit everyone in many ways. Even if you walk everywhere, unless you grow your own food you use roads.

On the other hand, many in the government (party affiliation does not always matter here) will try to get tax money for things that do not benefit everyone or penalize some for the betterment of others. Frivolous art multi-million dollar art displays in government buildings are a waste of tax payer dollars. Programs that reward people for not working and pumping out babies is another.

Taxes are the government's way to pay for operations.
The government has to maintain the country's infra structure, the military, all the social services programs and I don't know how many other programs that have, over the years, been added to its portfolio of responsibility.
Some governments understand that it is NOT their money, but that the money belongs to the citizens that work and pay to support the operations of this big family called a county.
Many, not all, governments and government officials and bureaucrats understand this and try to come up with ways to keep more of the money in the pockets of the people who earned it. Its a tough balancing act; trying to keep the expenses within the budget.
That would benefit not only conservatives, but also you democrats who instituted most of the social programs that we all have to pay for now, and who constantly whine about conservatives and come up with hair brained notions about what conservatives should and should not do. In short, keeping expenses within your income is important for families of all sizes.

Conservatives don't want to outlaw taxes. They realize that taxes are needed to pay for the military and other important government expenditures. What they want to do is keep the taxes to a minimum level and, until the Bush Administration, keep spending low.

No politicians really hate taxes--they just have different pet projects and priorities they advocate spending them on.

All the tax hike vs tax cut rhetoric is just that--campaign talk. You just have to look at their voting records and see which ones spend the $$ closest to what you support and how the taxes affect your income level, and it doesn't hurt to clean house every few years and start over with newbies who at least may think they believe in lower taxes when they first get there!

Its not that they necessarily hate taxes. They just don't to have to pay them and they don't their ultra rich buddies to have to pay any also. They just want the middle class and the poor to their taxes for them.

Republicans, you forget that daddy Bush, promised no new taxes but raised them anyway. Then again most modern Republicans don't know their history or remember what Santa Ana said," Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Because while we dislike the idea of taxes, believing this money to belong to the worker rather than the government, we also recognize that taxes are necessary to the operation of government. So we compromised. We lowered them so that folks who pay taxes can keep more of what they earn, which stimulated the economy and yet government could have the funds it needs to operate. That's how a democracy works. Welcome.

Bush did cut taxes.

What some seem to miss is that when you overtax a business, Payroll taxes, State, local, federal, Unemployments and so on, businesses cannot operate at any profit. Business closes or moves to China.

No business - No jobs - no more to say.

No, but even we are aware that the government has to be funded somehow. The alternatives that were presented have thus far been shot down.

Frank - So, since I make over $100000 per year I am "rich" and should be taxed more than someone that makes $95000 per year?
